North Carolina’s Winston-Salem Symphony will host a series of free virtual conversations leading up to its September 12-12 performances of Bill Barclay’s play with music The Chevalier, which features music by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the Black composer who was a contemporary of Mozart. The conversations, designed to address the play’s themes of race, power, and equality, will feature discussions with Music Director Timothy Redmond as well as musicians, writers, composers, and scholars from around the country: vocalist Jason McKinney and conductor William Henry Curry (July 22); musicologist and Florence Price scholar Kori Hill and violinist Er-Gene Kahng, who has recorded several Florence Price violin concertos (Aug. 5); Alexander Blake, founder and artistic director of the choral ensemble Tonality (Aug. 26); and Bill Barclay and violinist/music historian Quinton Morris. Each discussion will be offered at noon as a Zoom webinar or via Facebook Live. To participate, visit wssymphony.org/musicconnects.
