Virginia’s Alexandria Symphony Orchestra will launch its 2021-22 season in October with a pair of concerts featuring the “Benedictus” from Bruckner’s Mass No. 3 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, with the latter set to a new English text by former U.S. poet laureate Tracy K. Smith. Music Director James Ross will conduct the orchestra, Alexandria Choral Society, and vocalists Dara Rahming, Marquita Raley-Cooper, Rodrick Dixon and Daniel Rich. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of Brian’s Prechtl’s Tribute, commissioned for the ASO by Classical Movements’ Eric Helms New Music Program. A program in partnership with the Alexandria Film Festival will feature original films commissioned by the ASO and produced by local artists to accompany Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, Copland’s John Henry and Our Town, Griffes’s Clouds, Ives’s “Housatonic at Stockbridge” from Three Places in New England, Higdon’s Blue Cathedral, and Grant Still’s “Manhattan Skyline” from American Sketches. The orchestra’s holiday program will feature selections from Handel’s Messiah and The Nutcracker with Alexandria Choral Society and BalletNova. Other composers featured during the season include Barber, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, and Walker. The orchestra performs at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center and the George Washington Masonic Memorial.
