“COVID completely upended the Chamber Music Society of Detroit’s season … forcing them to quickly pivot to streaming and webcast performances,” writes Maureen Feighan in Saturday’s (8/7) Detroit News. In 2020, “ ‘two days after the World Health Organization declared the pandemic, we had an audience of 3,000 people watching our first webcast,’ said Chamber Music Society president Stephen Wogaman, who noted that’s five times the audience they would’ve had in person…. For its 2021-22 season, which kicks off in September, … they’ll offer live performances but stream them at the same time…. Live concerts and performances may be back at venues across the region but streaming is here to stay at some venues…. Some say they can reach even bigger audiences far beyond Michigan through streaming or to those with accessibility issues…. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra … has offered digital concerts for years but broadened its offerings during COVID-19 to include its pop concerts…. All told, since COVID, the Chamber Music Society of Detroit has [reached] an audience of nearly 200,000 people on six continents…. The Chamber Music Society of Detroit … has so much streaming equipment now … that they’re creating one set that they plan to set aside for nonprofit groups to use.”
