South Carolina’s Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra will open its 2021-22 season with two free outdoor pops concerts of film and popular music, the first on October 21 at Martin Family Park in Bluffton, during the Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival, the second on October 22 at Lowcountry Celebration Park at Coligny. The orchestra will present its 25th Hilton Head International Piano Competition from March 7 to 14, 2022. The first of HHSO’s nine orchestral programs at First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island will take place on October 24-25 and feature Beethoven’s First Symphony and Leonore Overture No. 3, and Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, with soloist Will Hagen. Also planned in 2021-22 are Jessie Montgomery’s new piano concerto, with soloist Awadagin Pratt; Arvo Pärt’s Fratres; Astor Piazzolla’s Aconcagua: Concerto for Bandoneón with soloist Hector Del Curto; Florence Price’s Piano Concerto, with Michelle Cann as soloist; and “Soul of Remembrance” from Five Movements of Color by Mary Watkins. Other repertoire will include music by Bernstein, Brahms, De Falla, Dvořák, Mendelssohn, Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov, Saint-Saëns, and Tchaikovsky.
