On October 2, the Houston Symphony will return to Jones Hall to perform its annual free Fiesta Sinfónica concert celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, after a yearlong absence during the pandemic. Guest conductor Rafael Enrique Irizarry, a native of Puerto Rico, will conduct Noel Estrada’s En Mi Viejo San Juan—often considered an unofficial national anthem for Puerto Rico—Jack Delano’s Sinfonietta para Cuerdas, and selections from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. The program also will feature the “Final Dance” from Falla’s Suite No. 2 from El Sombrero de tres picos; selections from Bizet’s Suites No. 1 and 2 from Carmen; Moncayo’s Huapango; and the finale of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol. There will be no intermission; seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and COVID safety protocols, such as mandatory mask wearing for the audience, will be in place.
