The San Luis Obispo Symphony will perform an American-themed concert on November 13, led by Music Director Andrew Sewell. The “American Showcase” program will include the third movement of local composer Stefan Podell’s Concerto for Double Bass, featuring Ken Hustad, the orchestra’s principal bass; Hustad, Podell, and Sewell will participate in a pre-concert discussion before the performance. The program also will include Thomas Siwe’s Duet for Snare Drum and Timpani; Warren Benson’s “Scherzino” from Three Pieces for Percussion Quartet; Alan Hovhaness’s Bacchanale; Jessie Montgomery’s Strum; Valerie Coleman’s Tzigane for Wind Quintet; William Banfield’s “In an Ellington Mood” from Symphony No. 6; and Ellington/Strayhorn’s Nutcracker Suite. The concert will take place at Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo; attendees must wear a mask and show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test result taken within 72 hours to be admitted.
