“The Jackson Symphony Orchestra is hoping to ‘pack the house’ to celebrate a pair of female composers … Nov. 13,” writes Chloe Miller in Sunday’s (11/7) Jackson Citizen Patriot (Jackson, MI). “JSO supporters Georgia Fojtasek and Carlene Walz-Lefere have been reaching out to offer free and half-price tickets to women’s groups in the community. The concert will feature the music of Audrey Kelley, a contemporary classical composer from Ann Arbor, and Fernande Decruck [1896-1954]…. The first half of will feature the world premiere of Kelley’s ‘Speakeasy,’ written in honor of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote in the U.S. It will also feature the American premiere of Decruck’s Harp Concerto with JSO Principal Harpist Chen-Yu Huang. The second half showcases Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. ‘The first half is … riffing off of a theme of being underrepresented,’ said Matthew Aubin, the JSO’s music director. The concert … originally scheduled to be performed in 2020 … was postponed due to COVID-19.… ‘I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands to delve into the history of how the 19th Amendment came about,’ Kelley said. ‘Postponing the performance fundamentally changed the piece.”
