“The Little Orchestra Society (L.O.S.) has promoted its director of education and recent associate director to the top administrative post,” writes Nicholas Beard in Tuesday’s (11/9) Musical America (subscription required). “Now executive director, Anthony C. Ball succeeds Joanne Bernstein-Cohen, who died in August at the age of 73. She had been with the L.O.S. for 34 years. In conjunction with David Alan Miller, appointed the orchestra’s artistic advisor in 2019, Ball will oversee the youth-purposed professional orchestra’s upcoming 75th anniversary season. Forced to take its programming online during the pandemic, L.O.S. will soon announce its plans for live performances, both in public elementary schools and in the concert hall. Among the latter’s program titles in the coming season: ‘Tchaikovsky in New York!,’ ‘Vivaldi’s Virtuosas!,’ ‘Treblemaker: The Opera!,’ and ‘Ellington & Gershwin: Rhapsodies in Jazz!’ Also planned are eight premieres by living composers, some performed under the baton of recently appointed Associate Conductor Jane Kim…. Prior joining L.O.S. in 2015, Ball owned a bookstore for two years in Salt Lake City, where, at the University of Utah, he earned a masters degree in music. From 2012-2013, he held the title of artistic programming director at the Juilliard School.”
