Welsch has a personal connection to the 65-year-old FSYO, which includes nearly 300 young people in its seven ensembles: He is a former member. Welsch, who grew up in Longwood, joined the FSYO’s horn section when he was 17. He began singing and playing trumpet in kindergarten, though horn remains his instrument of choice. He received his bachelor of music degree in music theory and composition at Stetson; a master’s in orchestral conducting from Syracuse University and his doctorate in musical arts from the University of Texas at Austin…. Welsch has been the associate conductor of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and general manager and music director of its youth orchestras. He also is the founding music director of Orquesta Filarmónica Juvenil México-USA ‘The Bridge,’ a binational youth program that brings together musicians from Ciudad Juárez and El Paso for performances on both sides of the border. ‘It is an extreme honor to return to the Central Florida region,’ Welsch said.”
