“John Anz, who has served interim executive director of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for the past eight months, has resigned, the SSO board of directors announced on Thursday,” writes Ray Kelly in Thursday’s (12/16) Republican (Springfield, MA). “Anz, who accepted a position outside the SSO, had been leading the organization since the resignation of Susan Beaudry in April…. Anz’s departure comes at an uncertain time for the 77-year-old orchestra. Its contract with maestro Kevin Rhodes has lapsed and the musicians have been without a contract since August 2020. A National Labor Relations Board hearing on a complaint brought by the American Federation of Musicians, Local 171, against the SSO management is set for next month. The SSO has not put on a concert at Symphony Hall in 21 months, though the unionized musicians have recently performed concerts there and Longmeadow as the Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. The SSO board has begun the process of identifying and hiring a new interim leader for the organization, according to Anthony Falcetti, president of the SSO board and chair of its management committee.”
