The Sphinx Organization’s Competition and SphinxConnect conference, both originally slated to take place in-person in Detroit from January 20 to 29, will now be presented virtually. Six finalists will perform virtually in the Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latinx classical string players, with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall. The semi-finals will be livestreamed on January 20 and the finals concert will be live-streamed on January 29; for more information visit the Sphinx Competition website. The “SphinxConnect 2022: Forging Alliances” conference, from January 27 to 29, will include more than 20 virtual sessions; the opening session will feature musician and Silkroad Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens in conversation with Sphinx’s founder, Aaron P. Dworkin. At the closing plenary session, Weston Sprott—dean of the Preparatory Division at the Juilliard School and a trombonist in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra—will speak with pianist and activist Lara Downes. Session topics include “Young, Gifted, and Bold: The Power of Emerging Leaders in Culture Change,” “Empowerment or Burden: a dialogue surrounding the charge of today’s diversity officers,” and “Shame or Reframe? Balancing activist vs. collaborative approaches to DE&I online.” Full SphinxConnect details are here.
