On February 3 at 7 p.m. ET, the Apollo Theater in New York City will host “Deep River: Black Currents in Classical Music,” a virtual event co-presented by the Apollo Theater, classical station WQXR, and American Composers Orchestra. The event will feature a recital by Howard Watkins, a pianist and assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, soprano Karen Slack, and baritone Kenneth Overton performing music by William Grant Still, Scott Joplin, Florence Price, and others. The performance will be followed by a panel discussion with the performers and composer Carlos Simon, moderated by WNYC host Jami Floyd. The event is free and is offered in conjunction with the Apollo Theater’s May 7, 2022 presentation The Gathering: A Collective Sonic Ring Shout. The Gathering is co-curated with National Black Theatre and presented in partnership with Gateways Music Festival, Harlem Chamber Players, and American Composers Orchestra.
