The Santa Barbara Symphony’s February 19 and 20 concerts at the Granada Theatre will feature The Great Circle, a new work by Jeff Beal commemorating the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslides in 2017 and 2018. Music Director Nir Kabaretti will conduct the concert, also featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”) and Jennifer Higdon’s Harp Concerto, featuring Principal Harp Michelle Temple. The Great Circle is described as a “visual and musical depiction of the landscape’s rebirth after the devastation of the Thomas Fire,” which nearly destroyed the composer’s home. The work includes five movements—Earth, Air, Fire, Water, and (Re)birth—and the presentation will include photographs of the devastation, the heroism of first responders, and new photographs of the foothill rebirth from the photographic research collection of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, which is co-presenting the concert with the orchestra.
