In March, the New Haven Symphony Orchestra will perform two Young People’s Concerts, which will be offered free this season for the first time. Music Director Alasdair Neale will lead the concerts at Shelton Intermediate School (March 26) and Lyman Center for the Performing Arts at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven (March 27). The one-hour “Introduction to the Orchestra” concerts will feature music by historic and contemporary composers including Jessie Montgomery, Gioachino Rossini, Béla Bartók, Gabriela Lena Frank, Felix Mendelssohn, and Sergei Prokofiev. The NHSO launched its “Children’s Concerts” series in 1933 at Yale University’s Sprague Hall; the series evolved into the Young People’s Concerts. This year’s concerts offer open access to tickets for the general public as well as schools; tickets are free but registration is required (newhavensymphony.org) and all attendees must follow the orchestra’s COVID-19 safety policies.
