“Hugh Wilson Long, a Tulane University professor whose broad realm of interests embraced teaching, music and health care management, died Wednesday in a snowmobile accident in Yellowstone National Park. He was 82,” writes John Pope in Saturday’s (3/5) NOLA.com (New Orleans). “A faculty member since 1969, Long held appointments in Tulane’s School of Law, A.B. Freeman School of Business and School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, which houses the health administration program he helped establish…. Music also played a major role in Long’s life, starting in childhood in Ohio, when he sang in the Columbus Boy Choir and [took] piano lessons … said his wife, Susan Krinsky. Long, who had played the French horn in high school, was also a trustee and former president of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the board of the League of American Orchestras. With Long’s death, ‘the LPO has sustained a devastating loss,’ said Mimi Kruger, the orchestra’s associate executive director…. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Benjamin Alan Long … a daughter, Dr. Kira Nicole Long … a sister, Amanya Wasserman … and three grandchildren. The funeral service is scheduled March 13 at 1 p.m. at [New Orleans’] Touro Synagogue.”
The League of American Orchestras is deeply saddened to learn of Hugh Long’s death. His service to the League, to the Louisiana Philharmonic, and to the cause of orchestral music was exemplary. He was elected to the League’s Board of Directors in June 2010 and served three terms; he would have begun his fourth term on the League’s Board beginning in June 2022. Highly active on the League’s Board, he served as chairman of the Program Committee (previously the Knowledge, Learning, and Leadership Committee) and was a member of the following committees: Executive, Human Resources, Audit, Investment, Finance, and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The League sends its condolences to his family, colleagues, and many friends.
