Ohio’s Canton Symphony Orchestra is accepting nominations through March 11 for its second Orchestrating Change Leadership Program, set to take place virtually from June 13 to July 1, 2022. The program is open to students from diverse backgrounds who are entering college in fall 2022 through those who will graduate in the spring 2022. Each participant will receive a $250 stipend. Students will be tasked to think creatively about the programs, initiatives, and educational projects at CSO and to create new ideas to promote diversity and equity in classical music. Students will attend lectures and Q&A sessions and present their final projects of the program to the CSO board, and receive feedback from board, staff, and outside perspectives. The program was established to further the mission of the orchestra’s Orchestrating Change podcast by creating programming to realize change within the Canton Symphony and the field of classical music. In 2021, the leadership program’s 10 undergraduate students gathered online to discuss issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the orchestra field. The 2021 cohort created an after-school music program that will be implemented in southeast Canton beginning in 2022. More information here.
