“Bernstein’s Overture to ‘Candide’ [will] launch the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 2022-23 season, which kicks off in September,” writes Jeremy Reynolds in Friday’s (3/25) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “ ‘We are truly thinking of this as a “back-to-normal” season,” said maestro Manfred Honeck, the orchestra’s music director. In Pittsburgh, back to normal means a gala in September headlined by violinist Joshua Bell and then a season-opening concert with conductor Osmo Vanska… conducting Berlioz’s ‘Symphonie fantastique.’ The remainder of the season [includes] Beethoven, Strauss, Mozart and Rachmaninoff alongside living composers Joan Tower, Rolf Martinsson, Carlos Simon, Jessie Montgomery and more, with a pair of world premieres by James MacMillan and Stacy Garrop…. The PSO [will perform] a new arrangement by Honeck and Thomas Ille of Strauss’ ‘Salome’ as an orchestral suite…. Conductors making their first appearance include Elim Chan, Fabien Gamel and Karina Canellakis. Noteworthy collaborations include Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre performing Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ with the orchestra … and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh … in four programs, notably Mozart’s Requiem. … Principal Pops conductor Byron Stripling returns to lead … performances … ranging from ‘The Sounds of New Orleans’ … to a concert featuring music of women in rock like Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin.”
