California’s Stockton Symphony commissioned Victoria Bond to write a work inspired by the life and legacy of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Music Director Peter Jaffe will conduct the world premiere of Ruth Bader Ginsburg: In Tune with Justice on April 2 at Atherton Auditorium. The work features a libretto by Jane Vial Jaffe, drawn from biographies of Ginsburg, and from Ginsburg’s own letters and speeches. Tama Brisbane, poet laureate of the City of Stockton, will serve as narrator. The work will be performed on a program including the Overture to Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, the Intermezzo from Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite (1919). In a program note, Bond writes, “Ruth Bader Ginsberg is a towering figure and an inspiration to me…. Knowing that she loved opera, … I chose Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro as the basis for my composition, borrowing freely and adapting his energetic pulse…. Jane Vial Jaffe has created a compact script, framing RBG’s words with her own original narrative…. The work ends with RBG’s optimism for the future: young people striving to create a better world for the next generation.”
