“The Manhattan School of Music’s Orchestral Performance (OP) graduate program is to have a new chairman in David Chan, longtime concertmaster of the Met Opera Orchestra and a conductor in his own right,” writes Susan Elliott in Friday’s (4/22) Musical America (subscription required). “He takes over as of July 1, succeeding Glenn Dicterow, who co-founded it 30 years ago, when he was concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. MSM says OP is the first accredited degree program of its kind in the U.S. The goal is to produce orchestral musicians, through musical training, of course, but also through lessons in orchestra governance, artistic planning, community engagement, and audience development. In addition to being a world-class violinist, Chan is an accomplished conductor, now in his fifth season as the inaugural music director of the APEX Ensemble (formerly the Montclair Orchestra) and his fourth as music director of the New York City-based Camerata Notturna chamber orchestra. He is an artistic partner of Mainly Mozart’s Festival of Orchestras and conducts the festival ensemble comprised of musicians from major U.S. ensembles….
