On June 3, Ohio’s Toledo Symphony Orchestra will perform two world premieres at its final Masterworks concert of the 2021-22 season. The program at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater will feature the debut of local composer Christopher Dietz’s Origin Story and a new piano concerto by TSO Music Director Alain Trudel. Since Trudel’s inaugural season in 2018-19, the orchestra has performed several of his works. Pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin will serve as soloist in Trudel’s new concerto, subtitled Alter(e). Trudel said, “The term ‘alter,’ has many meanings—to adjust, change, modify, reshape, revise—which to me, reflects the last several years of our lives. The pandemic kept us apart. Writing this work allowed me to feel close to those important to me, including my Toledo Symphony family.” Dietz’s Origin Story weaves together three different perspectives on creation. Dietz said, “I am very eager to present this work to the public after its premiere was cancelled in April of 2020 due to COVID. Maestro Trudel and the Toledo Symphony have been wonderful artistic partners.” The program will also feature Wang Jie’s Symphonic Overture on America the Beautiful and Gershwin’s Catfish Row, based on music from his opera Porgy and Bess.
